Topher Gent was born in Rhode Island and attended the Rhode Island School of Design. During his time at RISD, he focused his studies on exploring the cross sections of fine art, craft, and design, earning a BFA in Furniture Design.
Topher has worked in fabrication, design and development, manufacturing, production, and education. His diverse background ranges from jewelry and luxury goods to furniture and lighting. This led Topher to found his studio, Gent Design Company in 2015 in order to create limited edition and one-of-a-kind artist quality furniture and objects. Shortly after, Topher also signed on with Studio Dunn, a furniture and lighting design firm in Rhode Island. In 2016 he was awarded a Fellowship in Craft from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.
Topher has created multiple public installations throughout the Northeast, and been commissioned for private collections throughout North America. Today he is best known for his sculptural and functional work in steel, while implementing a combination of traditional craft and modern technology. He maintains his studio practice in Providence Rhode Island, and is an adjunct instructor in continuing education at the Rhode Island School of Design.
